I’ve never been a fan of art. I think it’s because I was grown up in a place where art
wasn’t really of much importance. I didn’t discover art until I got into college and took my first Fine Arts class, which was an introduction to drawing. There were so many aspects to how something is created from scratch and from imagination that I found a new respect for the Fine Arts. My first few years of college I was mostly going with the wind, hoping a wall would just turn up and I would suddenly know what I wanted to do. I knew I loved computers and working on them. I knew I really enjoyed the creative aspect of creating something from scratch. Then, I transferred to WSUV and discovered the DTC program.
Upon entering the program, my idea of graphic design consisted of what my cousin does (since he majored in the field). I always saw swirls of lines, contrasting colors, and
circle images in mind. I knew that those things are all visually pleasing to me and that I enjoyed seeing what he could create (see images 1 and 2).

I strayed away from graphic design and focused more on computer animation (which is where my true passion lies). I don’t think I was ready to dive into something that seemed so complex as Photoshop. I’m not going to lie; Photoshop intimidated me to the very core.
It wasn’t until I took Fine Arts 101 and eventually an advance Fine Arts class that I found where I truly fit in the Fine Arts department. I found Surrealism and that’s
where things kind of set off for me. Images 3 and 4 are great examples of what I found to be the really interesting about Surrealism.

The abstract art and almost unrecognizable forms (made out of recognizable things)
really attracts my attention. Image 3 was found on an artist’s Photobucket, whose
username is “Kimmers.” I was unable to find anything else about her. Image 4 is by Larry Carlson entitled Sleep in the Ground 3. Finding myself engulfed with Surrealism really sets off where my thoughts and direction are aimed when it comes to this class.
